About me
Hello :)
This is me: dkk - Doris Kawgan-Kagan. I was born in
1981 and live in Berlin, Germany.
On this page you will find different kinds of things I did and
made. As you can see, I don't have a favorite medium, I mess
around with many things. You can call this a bit unfocused (I
do). It's because I get bored with things easily and try
something new all the time. That's also the reason why I can give
you any recommendations which mediums or tools are best in my
opinion. They all work somehow...
On the computer (a Mac) I use a tablet, and I'm lucky enough to own a
Wacom Intuous 3 now. The software I work with most of the time is
Gimp (open source) now, and for vector graphics Inkscape (open
source, too). I own Manga Studio Debut, and it's a very powerful
tool if you want to make professional looking comics, but I never
got around drawing one with it. However, it's also nice for
monochrome graphics, because it comes with uncounted easy to use
screen-tones. As for making homepages I'm a bit oldfashioned. I
like to see every line of code I put into a file, that's why I
work with TextWrangler (open source) and WebDesign at the moment.
I partook in some small exhibitions:
- "Wege finden", Nachbarschaftshaus Friedenau in Berlin, 4th
July 2009 - 30th September 2009
- "Komplementär (Bipol-Art)", Bezirksklinik in Rehau,
23th October 2008 - February 2009
- "Komplementär (Bipol-Art)", Best Western Hotel in
Plauen, 19th March 2008 - September 2008
- "Living Dead Dolls Art Show", The Showroom NYC in New York,
31th October 2006 - November 2006
The History of this Site
We came a long way! Let's have a partly awkward review!
The precursor of this homepage went online early in 1998, at a
time when 56k modems were still en vogue. It was hosted by tripod
(which meant irritating pop-up windows and banners) and was
called "DeCayK's funny World of Madness". It was also pretty
lame. The only content were about 5 lousy pencil sketches, a few
not-so-funny funny texts and maybe 3 blurry photos of plants and
bushes, which were presented with a midi version of "Dance of the
Sugarplum Fairy" playing in the background (I am not kidding). It
was made with Frontpage - and it showed.
On 7th June 2000 the second version of this homepage went
online (actually a few days earlier, but on that day I added a
visitor counter which officially recorded the start). It came
with sub-galeries for pictures (my first CGs!), photos and comics
and featured a stunningly not-eye-friendly black background with
a poison green and red navigation frame. Some time later, when I
was getting into proper html scripting instead of using
what-you-see-is-what-you-get editors, the layout was completed by
awesome mouse-over buttons sporting my hand. If you moved the
mouse over a finger, you could read on the palm which gallery was
linked with it.
In the beginning of 2001 the next version came online. It had
a really nice blue color scheme. Soon after the launch flash
navigations were added, at first with futuristic mouse-over sound
effects. They were kicked some time later, because they
annoyed me when I was listening to mp3s while browsing my own
page. 16th Februar 2002 was another great milestone, the day when
I left tripod for my own domain, www.decayk.com!
Then for nearly 9 years only minor changes happened. I loved
the blue design of version 3 (and still do) and never wanted to
replace it with something new. The thing that was most dear to me
was a flash navigation with two wave lines moving in the
background. This undying love is the reason why I wrote this
historical review (and hey, you actually read it): I need to tell
you about how awesome the wave was and I also need to show it here to prove you how awesome it
was. I miss you, hypno wave :C
Anyway, in February 2010 I forfeit my old domain and set up the
latest design (version 4.0) on this-is-dkk.com, which went officially online on the 28th. And that's what
you're looking at right now. It may look a bit plain and boring,
but I think it's eye-friendly and easy to use, being so simple
and clean - no fancy effects, menus, scripts, animations or even
pictures to distract or confuse you. The white is also a good
choice as a neutral background to present artworks.
Well, let's see what happens from now on...
